What a Friend We Have in Jesus

I’ve been thinking of the lyrics to this song quite a bit lately. During this battle so far I have felt so much peace and support from people’s prayers. I’ve also been feeling how light Jesus’ burden is, as I know he’s with me every step of the way.
It makes me realize that in everyday life I’ve spent too much time forfeiting peace, and bearing needless pain and burdens. I try to white knuckle my way through life, and be self reliant.
Then when going through something like this, I lean more into God, and the support of his people. Suddenly, life with Leukemia is feeling easier and more peaceful than the regular hustle and bustle that I try to do on my own strength, until I turn to God when I fail.
So, I encourage you friends, don’t wait for a crisis to draw close to God, or ask for prayer from friends. Perhaps we could all feel Jesus’ light burden more throughout life if we were praying more for each other through the big and little things each day.
I also love the final verse of this Sing Team version. Such a picture it paints of praying to our Lord Jesus face to face, and being in endless praise and worship. That’s the promise of heaven; that forever, close, perfect relationship with him, that we are looking forward to someday.
What an amazing friend we have in Jesus!
( Verse 1)
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer
[Verse 2]
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
Jesus, Savior, is our refuge
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Are we weak and heavy laden
Cumbered with a load of care?
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer
[Chorus]
Oh, what a friend
Oh, what a friend in Jesus
Oh, what a friend
Oh, what a friend in Jesus
Blessed Savior, You have promised
All our burdens You will bear
May we ever, Lord, be bringing
All to you in earnest prayer
Soon, in glory bright unclouded
Face to face will be our prayer
Joyful praise and endless worship
Will be our sweet portion there
[Chorus]
Oh, what a friend
Oh, what a friend in Jesus
Oh, what a friend
Oh, what a friend in Jesus
[Outro]
Oh, what a friend (What a friend we have in Jesus)
Oh, what a friend in Jesus (We have in Jesus)
